“I am visiting North-eastern India regularly since 2007. I use to visit Seven Sisters (The common name of seven states of Northeast) every month. This is only because of my profession. I have a unique passion to visit holy places and places having ancient historical interest. This month my visit coincides Makar Sankranti, and I made my mind for a to trip Parsuram Kunda in Arunachal Pradesh (some geographical or knowledge of map may help better). It is in the Lohit district. The district named after river Lohit.”
It was 12th Jan, 2009. I started from Siliguri (West Bengal) and reached Guwahati (Assam) on 13th at about 9 am. I had to leave for Parsuram Kunda on the same day as 14th was the sacred day for having Kunda-Snan. I started for Tinsukia (Assam) at 7:30 pm. and reached there on the next day at 5:30 in the morning. Took a Bus at 6:00 and reached Parsuram at 11:45 am. I reached the queue for Kunda immediately. From 12 to 5 pm in the evening I was standing in that line. It is nearly 2 kilometer from the stating point to the Kunda. It is hilly-terrain. By the way friends, I took my last food on 13th afternoon in Guwahati and since then I had taken only a cup of tea in the 14th morning. I was empty stomach all the day and amazingly I was not feeling any hunger. I reached Kunda at 5:00 pm. Unclothed immediately and started dipping into the evening chilled water of the holy Kunda. I started for returning to Guwahati at 7:00 pm after having Prasad (Khichdi) and reach Guwahati at 5 pm on the next day. Is not it a super-hectic?
I was eager to take photographs of the Kunda for you all. But I could not. It was dark then. I am giving only one photo of the Hill and partly visible Lohit behind. One more reason for not giving photograph of the Kunda is obviously restrictions. In this kunda Men and Women from eight to eighty, bath together without caring for their cloths. No sense of nudity.
Suggestions for the person interested to visit Parsuram Kunda :
a. Plan your visit for 14th January as this is the most sacred day for Snan.
b. Nearest Airport is Dibrugarh which is just 45 kms from Tinsukia. Persons traveling by air can reach Dibrugarh.
c. Trains are available for Tinsukia from Kolkata, Delhi (daily) and weekly trains are available from Amritsar and southern states.
d. If you are trying from other places, reach Guwahati by 12th Jan. and take Kamrup Exp. Or Brahmapur Mail for Tinsukia in the evening.
e. Reach Tinsukia by 13th Jan. morning. Take rest for some time and start for Parsuram by afternoon (buses and sumo service is available till afternoon). Private taxis are also available from Tinsukia.
f. The journey between Tinsukia to Parsuram / Tezu is about 5 hrs. Inner line permit for pilgrimage are available at state border on payment of Rs. 15/-.
g. Reach Parsuram by evening and take rest in any dharamsala near the temple. Hotels are available in Tezu which is few kms. From Parsuram. Free food is served during Makarsankranti Mela (12th to 15th Jan) by various charitable societies near the temple.
h. Start queuing at 12 in the midnight for early Snan. The most preferred time is before 10 am. i.e. Pratasnan.
i. Arunachal is blessed with beautiful landscape and scenery. This is the land of exotic flora and fauna. Tourists are required to have inner line permit which is available from Arunachal House in Guwahati and other state capitals in India.
j. Interesting tourist places are Tawang, Bomdilla, Itanagar, Pasighat, Tezu, Zero.
k. Must carry – Identity proof, Warm cloths and inner line permit.
The myth of the Kunda :
Parasuram Kunda, a place of pilgrimage is situated in the lower reaches of the river Lohit at about 24 Kms. to the North-east (27 degree 51' IV and 96 degree 23'E) of Tezu. The other name of the Kunda is 'Prabhu Kuthar', the origin of the 'Kunda' viz. Parasuram Kunda is associated with Parasuram's matricide. The history goes in brief that one day Renuka, mother of Parasuram went to Ganga for having bath and bringing water by delay in bringing water made the Rishi Jamadagni, the husband of Renuka very angry as it was already getting late for the mid day worship. He asked the sons to kill her. None of his six sons except Parasuram could oblige. Parasuram chopped off the head of his mother indifference to the wishes of his father, but as a result of crime handle with his axe got struck to his hand. Jamadagni was very pleased with him for carrying out his order and asked Parasuram to have for boon.
Parasuram prayed for bringing his mother back to life, then enquired as to how to get rid of the crime of matricide. Jamadagni granted it and his mother got her life back and told Parasuram to visit " Brahma Kund" to wash off the sin. Parasuram came to the Brahma Kund, in Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh for holy dip in the kunda. Religious people, saints come to this kund on Makarsakranti which falls on the 14th January every year. The Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh extend all possible arrangement/help to those pilgrimage.
